The Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí)

The walk around the Old Town Square is to journey back in time. Every building has its own colorful history; every house reminds you of some historical event. White façade of the St. Nicolas Church is a dominant of this part of the square. The eastern part has two great examples of Gothic and Rococo architectonic styles: the Stone Bell House, originally a patrician palace of facades of other houses brighten the atmosphere of the square.

The Old Town City Hall (Staroměstská radnice)

The Old Town City HallThe Old Town City Hall was established in 1338 by decree of John of Luxemburg who decides to set up the seat of a town council there. By connecting several Gothic and Renaissance houses together, the building expended in 1945 it was badly destroyed by the Nazis and the building underwent an extensive reconstruction. Probably the most famous part of the Hall is the Town Hall. Tower Astronomical Clock - every hour, tourists gather if front of the Clock to admire this structure, whose mechanical clockwork has been in function since 1572 when it was contracted by Jan Táborský. The main attraction is the hourly procession of the twelve Apostles in two open windows. The allegory is completed with figures of the Niggard and the Vain on the left side and of the Turk and the Death ringing a bell on the right side. The performance ends up by a crowing cock with the time. The outer ring marks old -Czech time that was calculated according to the position of the Sun; the watch face with roman numerals shows current time and the inner ring shows Babylonian time.

Jan Hus MonumentIn the brother part of the Old Town Square, you can admire a Secession monument of a Czech hero, Protestant Reformist preacher Jan Hus (John Huss). Hus was burnt at the stake for his beliefs, after the Council of Constance found him guilty of heresy. The statue by Ladislav Šalamoun was unveiled in 1915 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Jan Hus. The massive monument depicts two groups of people - victorious Hussite warriors, and Protestants forced to exile 200years later. A statue of young mothers symbolizes national rebirth. Dominant figure of Hus emphasizes the moral authority of a man who scarified his life rather than his beliefs.

Its magnificent multiple steeples in Gothic style tower above the Square are a dominant of the Old Town. Its construction started in 1365. From the early 15th century until the time of forced recatholicization in 1620, the church became a bastion of the Hussite movement. Many places of interest are to be found here, among them a beautiful entrance portal with scenes of Christ's Passion, a statue of Calvary, a tint font and an altar from the 15th century. Danish astronomer Tycho de Brahe has a tomb her. The most of the houses on the southern part of the square are of Gothic or Roman origin. Their house signs are exquisite. The house block between Celetná Street and Železná Street is especially beautiful. The square had always been a lively place - today, there is a Tourist Office and a various restaurants, coffee bars, shops a galleries. 

Kinský Palace (Palác Kinských)

Kinsky Palace

This fine Rococo palace houses graphic works from the National Gallery collation. It was built according to the design of Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. In a critical year 1948, the firs communist president Klement Gottwald declared the advent of the communist leadership times power from the balcony of this building.

 

 

 

Church of St. Nicholas (Kostel sv. Mikuláše)

Church of St. NicholasAlready in the 13th century there stood a church at this site. It got under administration of the Benedictine Order after Battle of the White Mountain in 1620. However, the church was rebuilt according to the design of Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer and competed in 1735.
